Stephen Herold Handmade Paper

Hand and Mouldmade Papers

I have been fortunate in acquiring a large selection of fine handmade writing and drawing papers. They are mostly English and date from 1589 to around 1972, when the last commercial mills shut down in Britain. All papers listed here are handmade unless otherwise specified. Sizes and weights are approximate, but are as close as we can determine. Sizes do not include deckles. Quantities are very limited so check on availability. No samples are available except for WSH Creme Laid where I have some small trim pieces.

(Discounts for calligraphy teachers or active members of a calligraphy society – let me know when you order.)

Barcham Green Cobham Medium

This paper was created for calligraphers and is my personal favorite writing paper. It is white, smooth, accepting of ink and immensely strong. The deckles are very subtle and small, as they should be in well made paper. From the Barcham Green mill at Maidstone, Kent.

Maidstone

A soft-finished HP paper by Barcham Green. This making was the first to use acid-free synthetic sizing and that causes the softer surface. Good for drawing and light watercolors, less suited to calligraphy.

Ogmore

A mould-made, light weight drawing paper by Barcham Green. A toned golden shade that is easy on the eye when working and gives an antique look to the page. Pen and ink drawings and calligraphy suit it.

Whatman Cloister Medium

From the legendary Whatman mill which has the distinction of being the only handmand paper to be counterfited -- watermark and all. White and glassy smooth with a heavy tub sizing (called "English" sizing in the trade). A work of art in itself and very rare today as the mill closed in 1961.

120 gsm
Hot Press
$30.00/sheet

Whatman Double Foolscap

A cylinder mould made paper which is even sweeter to write on than the Cloister. Smooth, white and perfectly sized for writing but will not take heavy erasures.

$25.00/sheet

Whatman Medium Lightweight

A cylinder mould made paper with a glassy smooth, hotpress surface and a snappy, light weight body like the paper money is printed on. Dated 1958 in the watermark. A bagain sheet of paper by a great maker.

$9.00/sheet

Chinese Fujien Bamboo Paper

A ninteenth century Chinese handmade paper that is folded twice like bolts of silk. Taken from eastern China in 1949 by an antique dealer fleeing the communist takeover. Delicate and fragile with folds that iron out, and it contains occassional small fiber lumps. It takes a light touch of the pen with crisp strokes and suits watercolors as well. A test of the delicacy of your hand. I usually tear it along the folds into three tall pieces.
20.75" x 21.5"
75 gsm
Internal sizing
$9.00/sheet

Other Papers Available

I have a large quantity of assorted hot-pressed papers from the mid 20th century, all in small quantities but up to double elephant size. Enquiries encouraged.
