CHEVALIERS DE LA TOISON D'OR

MAISON DE BONAPARTE (HOUSE OF BONAPARTE)

Knights of the Golden Fleece nominated by King Joseph Bonaparte

King Joseph was sovereign of the Order from 18 September 1809 following the forced abdication of both King Charles and Ferdinand while the "guests" of Napoleon. By Royal Order of King Ferdinand VII of 18 Oct 1814 he ordered the removal from the roll of the Order of the Emperor Napoleon and all his family, with the unique exception of Prince Eugene de Beauharnais. Those nominated by King Joseph Bonaparte were treated as traitors and were never considered to have been legally nominated. The surviving knights all retired to France where they spent their lives in obscurity, never returning to their homeland. Joseph was originally appointed a Knight of the Order in 1805 by King Charles IV, along with Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis Bonaparte, Joseph Cardinal Fresch, Prince Murat and Prince Eugene de Beauharnais, and so his removal by Ferdinand had to be based on his being a "traitor" to his sovereign of the Order.
